When Pat came to live with us, she was in a really sad place; she had lived through many personal difficulties, she was scared, anxious and confused. At first Pat was very withdrawn and very reluctant to mix with anyone, or join in and preferred staying in her room, which increased her loneliness and social isolation.
With gentle persuasion and small but consistent steps, the care team started to break down some of Pats social barriers and with the kindness shown to her, she began start to trust the team and became more accepting of her surroundings. Pat started to relax more, and her confidence grew. The care team continued to encourage and support Pat and she eventually started to venture outside of her room and join some of the other residents but remained reserved.
Two weeks after Pat moved in, we were joined by Shirley. Shirley has lived alone for many years and her vision has become increasingly impaired, which has increased her dependency on others; she was lonely and vulnerable. It was a huge step for Shirley to give up her home and she was uncertain what life would be like in a care home. Shirley came on a trial basis, as she needed to be sure this was the right decision for her.
Shirley moved into the room next door to Pat and gradually, the two of them got to know each other, found comfort in each other and began a beautiful friendship.
Here they are together, 2 lovely ladies, each have their own challenges but together they can enjoy each other’s company, sharing stories and their life experiences, whilst cosying up for the evening on the sofa, in their forever home at Trent Bridge Care Home.
