Bernard celebrates a century with Royal surprise delight

Abbey Wood Lodge, located at 173 County Road, Ormskirk, Lancashire, recently had the honour of celebrating an extraordinary occasion—the 100th birthday of Mr Bernard Harrison. Born on 25th January 1925, Bernard’s milestone was marked with a heartwarming celebration that brought together family, friends, and the caring community of Abbey Wood Lodge.

The lounge was transformed into a festive haven for the cherished resident, filled with joyous laughter and well-wishers. It’s a moment that Bernard never anticipated, despite knowing a small gathering was planned. The room buzzed with energy as guests showered him with an abundance of cake, gifts, hugs, and love, creating an environment of sheer happiness.

Proud memories poured forth as Bernard shared stories from his remarkable life while flipping through treasured photographs. A touching highlight of the event was a special visit from representatives of the Royal Navy, who presented Bernard with a token of recognition for his brave service during WWII, acknowledging the challenges he faced while clearing mines from the British Channel as a young man. A World War II Jeep was also on hand for Bernard to admire, evoking nostalgia from days gone by.

Earlier in the month, Abbey Wood Lodge had reached out to the community, requesting birthday cards for Bernard, aiming for a total of 100. The response was overwhelming, with over 134 cards received, and more continuing to arrive, showcasing goodwill from far and wide. A delightful video message from a local primary school wishing him a happy birthday added an extra layer of warmth to the celebration.

But the highlight of the day came with a remarkable surprise—Bernard received an official birthday card from Buckingham Palace, signed by none other than King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla. In a whimsical turn of events, the ‘King’ himself made an unexpected appearance to present this special card, delighting Bernard and all in attendance.
