One resident at Sleaford Hall Care Home was feeling anxious about the home’s fire drill procedures. Having previously worked in a warehouse setting, they were accustomed to immediate evacuation as soon as alarms sounded. However, the care home’s procedures are tailored to residents’ complex needs, requiring evacuation behind two closed fire doors rather than exiting the building immediately.
To address this concern and provide reassurance, the team at Sleaford Hall invited the local Fire Services to host a special coffee morning. Colin, Tom, John, and Oscar from Sleaford Fire & Rescue Service joined the residents and staff to discuss how different businesses conduct fire drills and to explain why the care home’s approach was appropriate for their setting.
During the visit, the firefighters showcased their equipment outside on the fire truck. Residents enjoyed trying on fire helmets, handling some of the equipment, and learning more about the vital work firefighters do. Afterward, everyone returned inside to share snacks and beverages. Colin took the opportunity to speak to the residents, easing their minds and reassuring them that the home’s fire drill procedures were both safe and effective.
This engaging and educational event not only alleviated concerns but also strengthened the residents’ confidence in the care home’s safety measures, making the day a memorable experience for all.
