At Toray Pines, we are passionate about raising money for charities that support research and provide vital information for residents, families, and friends. Throughout the year, we’ve held various events with our residents and team.
In May, our residents joined their families for a special activity: baking scones for a public cream tea event to support Dementia UK. One of our residents, Roger, led the activity with his daughter Nina, meticulously following the recipe and weighing out ingredients. Roger, a retired engineer and model airplane enthusiast, brought his precision to the task, ensuring the scones were consistent in size and shape. Despite vision challenges, Pearl and her daughter Jen worked together to mix butter and flour, with Jen describing each step to her mother. Jackie, our ultimate baker, provided two trays of scones, working diligently long after the group activity had ended. Jo ran back and forth to the kitchen, coordinating with our Head Chef Mandy to ensure perfect results.
We promoted the event through posters around town and on social media. Jo was greeted at the door by Cathy, a community member recently diagnosed with dementia. Cathy shared her fears and feelings of isolation, explaining that her husband, who is her main caregiver, also felt overwhelmed. Jo invited them to join our activities, offering a sense of community and support.
Later that week, we hosted the Dementia UK cream tea, welcoming friends from the community. Assistant Chef Jayne and Jo served the scones with cream and jam, while Penny from the Lions’ Den poured hot drinks. New and regular attendees, including Cathy and her husband, enjoyed each other’s company and the residents proudly shared the fruits of their labor. Donations were collected, and we were thrilled to raise £37 for Dementia UK.
Earlier this month, our Home Manager Ellie participated in a Tough Mudder event on behalf of the Alzheimer’s Society, raising over £700.
On July 25th, we have a significant event planned: a talk by guest speaker Ian Donaghy at the local village hall, followed by a book signing at Toray Pines. The event will also feature stalls from the Alzheimer’s Society and Relish, with promotional materials from Dementia UK.
Looking ahead, in September, the Toray Pines team will participate in the 12k Mam Tor to Edale Peak District walk to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society and Dementia UK. We hope to exceed our fundraising goals and physical challenges. You can support us by sponsoring the team at www.justgiving.com/page/teamtoray.
At Toray Pines, we are committed to supporting the charities that help our loved ones and will continue our fundraising efforts in the future. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for more upcoming challenges and events.
