On the 26th of August we celebrated international dog’s day at Sandpiper. The annual celebration started in 2004, Colleen Paige a pet lover wanted to raise awareness about dog shelters.
This day is to draw attention to the multiple ways in which dogs contribute to our society and the values that dogs bring to our daily lives. To celebrate international dogs day, Sandpiper invited team members and families to visit the home with their pets so, our residents could spend time with them. Our residents were able to spend time with each dog, cuddling and feeding them treats.
One resident Pat commented, ‘I have absolutely adored this afternoon I am a real dog lover. I own 13 Shetland sheepdogs that I used to breed. I have taken part in many dog shows. I have several rosettes and have also received a best in show trophy, I have this in my room at Sandpiper. I would love for Sandpiper to host their very own dog show.’
The presence of a dog can have significant benefits and research has shown that it can decrease feelings of anxiety and sadness and increase positive emotions, social interaction, and joy. It really was a pawsome occasion.
