International Women’s Day at Toray Pines Care Home
In celebration of International Women’s Day, Toray Pines Care Home is honouring the resilience and determination of Joanne, a cherished resident, as she embarks on a meaningful walk to raise funds for The Alzheimer’s Society.
Joanne was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) in January 2020, shortly after the Covid lockdown. The first signs of her condition—short-term memory loss—had gradually begun affecting her role as an admin and supervisory professional within the local council, a position she had dedicated herself to since the age of 18. Joanne was only 50 when formally diagnosed, but had signs for 2 years prior to that.
A passionate traveller, artist, and photographer, Joanne spent her spare time capturing the world’s beauty, painting in watercolours, and documenting her extensive journeys across Europe, the UK, and beyond. Her family has lovingly compiled a collection of scrapbooks showcasing her adventures, preserving the memories that dementia cannot take away.
One of Joanne’s greatest joys in life has always been walking—whether alone or in a group, she would regularly cover 12 miles at a time, in all weathers. While her diagnosis led to the loss of her career and home, she has continued to find comfort in walking, thanks to the support of her brother and the team at Toray Pines.
Now, in a show of strength and perseverance, Joanne will be walking alongside Lifestyle Coordinator, Jo, to raise funds for The Alzheimer’s Society.
Toray Pines Care Home invites the local community to sponsor Joanne in her inspiring effort to support those living with dementia.
“Joanne’s story is one of resilience, independence, and passion. We are incredibly proud to support her as she continues doing what she loves while raising awareness for such an important cause,” said Jo, Lifestyle Co-ordinator at Toray Pines Care Home.
