Richard House resident knits 100 hats for premature babies

Christine Pemberton, an 80-year-old resident at Richard House Care Home in Grantham, has knitted 100 hats for premature babies, inspiring others to join in her efforts.

Christine, a dedicated crafter, previously made ribbon wreaths for staff and residents. She started knitting the hats after a suggestion from the home’s lifestyle manager, Anita Asken, and a conversation with her granddaughter, whose friend is a midwife at Pilgrim Hospital in Boston. The hospital faces a high demand for clothes for premature babies due to limited resources. Christine began knitting before Christmas and recently completed 100 hats in various colors and patterns, averaging one hat every two days.

Her remarkable efforts have encouraged others to contribute, including a resident’s daughter who donated crocheted hats. Christine remarked, “You can’t imagine how small these babies are, can you? I’ve enjoyed doing it, and people have kept coming in and asking questions, and they’ve been lovely. I was inspired while doing it.”

Christine loves crafting, particularly knitting, and also enjoys playing Scrabble. Her kindness and dedication have not only provided essential items for premature babies but have also fostered a sense of community and generosity within Richard House Care Home.
