Toray Pines welcomes Ian Donaghy

Hi, I’m Ellie, the home manager at Toray Pines in Coningsby, part of the Tanglewood group. This year, we’re on a mission to fundraise and raise awareness for dementia.

With over 55 million people worldwide living with dementia, and it being the UK’s biggest killer, it’s often misunderstood as just a part of aging. But that’s far from the truth. One in three people born today will develop dementia in their lifetime. This staggering statistic highlights the urgent need for more conversation and action. Dementia costs the UK £42 billion annually, and research predicts this will rise to £90 billion by 2040, with social care costs soaring from £17 billion to £41 billion.

Despite these figures, dementia research is desperately underfunded, receiving 2.5 times less government funding than cancer research in 2020.

At Toray Pines, we have two fundraisers open this year. I’m taking on a Tough Mudder in July for Alzheimer’s Society, and our team is doing a 12k walk from Edale to Mam Tor in September. So far, we’ve raised £968 and counting!

We’re also hosting a dementia awareness event featuring Ian Donaghy, filmmaker, author, and dementia campaigner. We hope to spread the word and spark more conversations about these critical issues affecting millions.
